Book Clubs

CELT Book Club

Each semester, the Committee for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) selects one book related to teaching and learning and hosts a monthly book club. Each meeting lasts for one hour and provides faculty participants the opportunity to discuss the book with colleagues.

This spring semester, CELT is reading Sarah Rose Cavanagh’s Mind Over Monsters: Supporting Youth Mental Health with Compassionate Challenge (Beacon Press, 2023). We have all experienced an uptick in student mental health issues, and Cavanaugh’s book provides a guide to both understanding them by exploring “pedagogical, neuroscientific, and psychological research on mental health” and addressing them by “cultivat[ing] learning and living environments characterized by compassion [while] guid[ing] our youth into practices that encourage challenge, helping them face their fears in an encouraging, safe, and even playful way.”

Book club will meet twice during the semester:

  • Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 3:00 PM (in person or Zoom) or Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 3:00 PM (Zoom only)
  • Tuesday, April 23 at 3:00 PM (in person or Zoom) or Wednesday, April 24 at 3:00 PM (Zoom only)

If you are interested in participating this semester, please complete the book club registration form. Space is limited.
