WCU Cottrell Center Student-Owned Business & Innovation Fund

Have a business idea you’re excited about—or already running a small business while you’re at WCU? The Cottrell Entrepreneurship Center is here to help you take the next step.

The WCU Student-Owned Business & Innovation Fund provides funding to help students turn ideas into reality and grow student-owned businesses. Whether you’re just getting started or already making sales, this fund is designed to support your journey as a student entrepreneur.

What You Can Apply For

  • Funding amounts: $500–$2,000
  • Who can apply: Undergraduate and graduate students
  • When: Applications are reviewed monthly

How the Application Process Works

  1. Complete this application and submit it through the CELC website or email it to cottrellcenter@wcupa.edu.
  2. You’ll receive a confirmation email within one week of submitting your application.
  3. A selection committee reviews applications on a monthly basis.
  4. If selected, you’ll be invited to meet (in person or virtually) with one or more committee members to talk about your idea or business.
  5. Awards are based on the strength of your application and available funding.
  6. You’ll receive an email with the committee’s decision. If awarded, you’ll get instructions on how to receive your funds.
  7. Fund recipients and business names will be featured on the Cottrell Center website.

Eligibility

  • You must be a currently enrolled WCU undergraduate or graduate student when you apply.
  • You must still be enrolled when award decisions are made.

How You Can Use the Funds

Funding should be used to develop, launch, or grow your idea or business. Examples include: - Market research or testing your idea - Inventory or supplies - Business registration or incorporation fees - Legal, patent, copyright, or trademark costs - Website development - Marketing and sales support

You’ll be asked to provide price quotes, invoices, or receipts when requesting reimbursement or payment.
