P.I.A.A S.T.A.R.T. Program

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, In. (PIAA) is the officiating governing body of high school sports within the state of Pennsylvania. The function of PIAA is to develop and enforce rules regulating interscholastic athletic competition following NFHS guidelines.

Students of Today Are Referees of Tomorrow is a program that the PIAA has put in place to recruit new officials. The PIAA supplies the instructors and materials and students take the courses for free. The program is also open to non-students, but they pay the usual PIAA registration fee of $40. If at least five officiating recruits sign up for any one sport, we will offer an officiating class. The program runs a consistent night of the week for three hours over the course of three weeks. Typically the first two nights of the class, the interpreter talks about what it means to become an official, reviews basic rules, plays/case studies and prepares them to pass the PIAA state test during the third and final night of the class.
