Provost's Message
Dear colleagues,
Welcome back to what promises to be an exciting and impactful spring 2025 semester! As we gather our energies for the months ahead, we are reminded of the exceptional dedication you bring to our students, to one another, and to the broader mission of West Chester University. Your unwavering commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and community engagement continues to shape the future of our institution and the lives of those we serve.
This semester holds special significance as we prepare for a historic moment in our university’s journey: the inauguration of Dr. Laurie Bernotsky as the 16th president of West Chester University. On Friday, March 28, 2025, we will formally celebrate Dr. Bernotsky’s leadership during an inauguration ceremony that will undoubtedly inspire us all. This event marks not only a transition in leadership but also a renewed commitment to our core values and our shared mission.
The inauguration celebration will be more than a single day—it will be a week-long series of events that reflect WCU’s dedication to student success and its role as a steward of place within the communities we serve. From an academic showcase recognizing WCU’s capacity as an R2 research institution to campus spirit activities, service-related activities, alumni events, and opportunities to reflect on our shared purpose, this week will be a testament to the transformative impact of higher education and the vibrancy of the WCU spirit. We encourage each of you to participate in and contribute to this extraordinary celebration.
As we embark on this new semester, let us continue to embrace our roles as educators, mentors, and innovators. Together, we have the privilege and responsibility of empowering our students to achieve their dreams, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive, and strengthening the bonds that connect our university to the wider world. As Dr. Shaun Harper reminded us in his closing address for our Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration, our work is not divisive; it brings people together. The education we provide to students at WCU is important not only to our students’ future but also for our democracy.
Thank you for all that you do to advance West Chester University’s mission. We look forward to seeing the remarkable achievements this semester will bring and to celebrating our collective accomplishments during the inauguration festivities.
Wishing you a semester filled with inspiration, growth, and success.
Best regards,
Jeff Osgood, Tabetha Adkins, and Josh Auld

Wells School of Music Piano Student Competed at Prestigious Chopin Competition
WCU’s Wells School of Music student Alyssa Gabrilovich ‘28 - a first-year student studying Piano Performance - was one of only 23 students invited to recently compete in the prestigious 11th National Chopin Piano Competition from January 4 – 12, 2025, in Miami, Florida. The professional competition occurs every five years and is directly connected to one of the biggest international piano competitions – the Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland. With first-prize earnings of $100,000, participants are carefully selected through a competitive video audition process.
Assistant Professor of Piano Dr. Igor Resnianski is Gabrilovich’s longtime teacher. Resnianski says, “The Wells School of Music is excited to congratulate Alyssa for her participation in this highly selective competition, which in and of itself is an achievement. Alyssa is the first student at West Chester University to participate in the Chopin competition, and we are very proud of her hard work and commitment to her craft. We know she has a bright future ahead of her.” Gabrilovich, who is 19 years old, has studied with Resnianski since she was 7 years old. She says, “I did not expect to be accepted into this competition. I was so surprised and so happy to be invited. Being amongst so many other gifted pianists is very motivating.”
Gabrilovich made her stage debut at the age of 9 as a soloist with the Southeastern Pennsylvania Symphony Orchestra. She has performed with orchestras in the Philadelphia area, the New Orleans Civic Symphony, and has received awards in over 40 youth competitions including the Chicago International Music Competition, Kaufman Music Center International Youth Piano Competition, New Orleans Piano Institute Competitions, and the WCUPA National Piano Competition. Gabrilovich also won the Pennsylvania State MTNA Competitions for many years and the Eastern Division MTNA in 2020. She was a finalist in the Philadelphia Orchestra Greenfield Competition (2020), Yamaha USASU Young Artists International Senior Piano Competition (2023), and a quarter-finalist in the Cliburn International Junior Piano Competition (2023). Gabrilovich was a recipient of the Chopin Foundation of the US scholarship in 2020-2022 and YoungArts winner in 2023. She performed live at the WRTI-FM studios in Philadelphia and was featured in NPR’s From the Top program in 2020 and 2023.
Renowned as one of the premiere piano competitions in the world, the National Chopin Piano Competition of the United States is widely recognized as a pivotal stepping stone towards a thriving career in piano performance. It is designed to offer performance opportunities and financial support to young American pianists and to enable the Prize Winners to take part in the 19th International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. Through competition prizes, scholarships, and performance opportunities, the organization has touched the lives of thousands of young artists. Across five decades, over 500 young pianists have applied and more than 200 of America’s best pianists from 30 states were selected to compete in Miami during the first ten editions of the National Chopin Piano Competition. Since the first Competition in 1975, held in collaboration with the University of Miami, five American pianists have won top prizes in Warsaw.

WCU’s Art & Design Department to Exhibit "Passages: An Installation in Progress" January 21 – March 30
(Story courtesy of WCU Communications & Marketing)
From January 21 – March 30, 2025, West Chester University will exhibit Cheryl Harper’s Passages: An Installation in Progress (Passages) in the John H. Baker Gallery, E.O. Bull Center for the Arts, 2 E. Rosewood Ave., West Chester. The exhibit is FREE and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays by appointment only. Information at artinfo@wcupa.edu or call WCU’s Dept. of Art + Design at 610.436.2872.
Harper is a critically acclaimed Philadelphia-based artist and historian. Ms. Harper will give a lecture in the Baker Gallery on Thursday, January 30th, at 1:00 pm, followed by a question and answer session and an artist reception. Passages explores the intersectionality of Harper’s family’s history of Holocaust loss and her husband’s family history of enslaving in the American South. The site-specific installation debuted at the Maier Museum of Art in Lynchburg, Virginia, in 2020, and explores themes of heritage, identity, persecution, and privilege.
Harper says, “Anti-Semitism and bigotry are on the rise around the world, and I feel it is urgent that we communicate and consider the histories of the oppressed and oppressors from multiple points of view. I am a Jewish woman who lost extended family in the Holocaust and who married a direct descendant of a Southern plantation family that owned other people. Passages is an evolving project that explores the dual nature of my family history. I contrast the material legacy left by my husband’s family, who as slave owners were oppressors, with the items passed down by my family, who as Jews living in Eastern Europe in the twentieth century were among the oppressed. The purpose of my project is to bring attention to the feelings of loss that are still pervasive among Jews and African Americans as a result of their persecution and to foster discussion and understanding.”
Harper’s installation incorporates 10-foot-high hand-printed wallpaper, embellished wedding dresses, family heirlooms, and found artifacts. The exhibit continues to evolve and grow as Harper finds more to include through her research on her family. This particular iteration of the project is the result of a collaboration between Harper and West Chester professors David Jones and Catharine Wallace.
Chair of WCU’s Dept. of Art & Design David Jones says, “WCU’s Dept of Art + Design is increasingly committed to utilizing our exhibition spaces to provoke thoughtfulness and foster conversation among our students, faculty, and the public. Accordingly, we are privileged to host Ms. Harper’s installation. The intersectionality of themes unique to this project will enable critical discussions about legacy, identity, and equity. Furthermore, Ms. Harper’s work is uniquely positioned to acquire evolving connotations with respect to contemporary geopolitical and social challenges, eliciting a series of ongoing, dynamic conversations.”
