Dr. Daris McInnis began his teaching career as an early elementary classroom teacher in Washington, D.C. Prior to joining WCU, Dr. McInnis served as the Summer Learning Curriculum Specialist with the Free Library of Philadelphia. His research interests include family literacy, early childhood education, Black children’s literacy development, and critical literacy. He also serves on multiple advisory boards including Reading is Fundamental and BookSmiles. Dr. McInnis holds a doctorate in Reading/Writing/Literacy from the University of Pennsylvania and a M.A.T. in Early Childhood Education from Trinity University. He is also a Tillman Scholar and served five years on active duty in the U.S. Army as an Ordnance Logistics Officer.
