Bio
Dr. Jason A. Bartles is a writer and Associate Professor of Spanish at West Chester University. Uniting his scholarly and creative projects is a sustained interest in restoring the possibilities for utopian thinking, that is, for imagining ways to work toward more democratic, radically inclusive, and egalitarian communities without eliminating differences through violence. His research explores the ways in which political, ethical, and scientific discourses that traverse the fiction and essays of Latin American and Latinx writers, ranging from the historical avant-gardes to the present, with an emphasis on the 1960s and ‘70s.
His first book, ARTELETRA: The Sixties in Latin America and the Politics of Going Unnoticed, (Purdue University Press, 2021), received the Honorable Mention for the Premio Mejor Libro en Humanidades by the Southern Cone Studies Section of LASA. Recently, he has begun a project studying the transatlantic cultural archives of the Malvinas/Falkland Islands and the potential for utopian thought today.
Currently, he teaches in the Department of Languages and Cultures, and he has taught courses ranging from Spanish language courses and translation to graduate and undergraduate courses in modern and contemporary Latin American and Latinx cultural, literary, and film studies.
