move in day west chester universityThey’re baaaaaack! Hauling mini-refrigerators, duffel bags, laptops, backpacks, and all the accoutrement’s needed for college, WCU first-year students will move into their on-campus residence halls on Friday, August 24, between 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Upperclassmen will start moving into their WCU residence halls on Saturday, August 25, between 9 am – 5 pm. The first day of classes for all WCU students will be on Monday, August 27.

The University expects fall 2018 enrollment to exceed fall 2017 enrollment, which totaled 17,306 students (= 14,451 undergraduate students & 2,855 graduate students).  Official fall 2018 enrollment numbers will be available on the 15th day of class. Virtually 100% of the anticipated growth at the graduate level is occurring in online Distance Education offerings.

WCU move in dormsThis fall, approximately one in four (24%) of WCU’s new first-year students self-reported during orientation registration that they are first-generation college students. As part of a new pilot program, more than 100 first-generation college students and their 200+ family members will be welcomed intermittently between 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. in Sykes Student Union (2nd Floor) in the Center for Student Involvement, located at 110 W. Rosedale Avenue in West Chester.

After moving into their new on-campus digs, these new students and their family members will drop-in to speak with friendly WCU faculty, staff, and students, many of whom were also the first in their family to attend college, to make immediate WCU connections, learn about academic support offerings, financial aid, scholarship offerings, clubs to join, have lunch, receive a “West Chester’s First” t-shirt, and even talk to WCU President Christopher Fiorentino (from 12 – 12:30 p.m.).  Research continues to show that making these connections early on is the key to academic success for first-generation college students.

In celebration of the many first-generation students who are calling West Chester University home, members of Student Affairs and Academic Affairs are collaborating to launch a pilot program that has been specifically designed to support the University’s first-generation college students and their families. Throughout the coming year, monthly programs will be offered to these students that foster a strong support network, promote campus resources, and connect them directly to their peers and members of the campus community.
